Students have high levels of self-confidence and excellent attitudes to learning. At RIS, we believe that our promotion of students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and their mental and physical wellbeing enables them to thrive. This helps our students to be thoughtful, caring and active citizens in school and in wider society.
Wellbeing
Promoting positive student wellbeing is at the core of all that we do. We believe that a child who feels happy, safe, welcomed and that they have a voice that will be heard is a child who flourishes. We take inspiration from the positive psychology work of Dr Martin Seligman as we cultivate and recognise Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishments. We believe our students are destined to thrive and to achieve greatly and that is our responsibility to provide them with the tools not only to handle setbacks, but to learn, grow, show resilience and ultimately flourish in their bright and exciting futures.
Student Leadership
Our students have an abundance of opportunity to lead the community and our student leadership structure contains many layers. We value the collaboration of our student councils and appreciate the impact our young leaders have. Our Primary and Secondary Student Councils establish a sense of community within the school by contributing to the wider curriculum, building independence and promoting excellence. Student Councils encourage students to get involved in issues that concern them in and around the school. Student leaders regularly meet with the school senior leaders to discuss school improvement from a student perspective.
Senior Secondary students (Sixth Form) have their own study centre and a student leadership structure including Head Boy and Head Girl and senior prefects. Students in all year groups have the opportunity to take the lead in sports, eco-committees, debating and a range of events. Leadership and innovation is supported and encouraged.
The Raffles International School House System
From the respectful, competitive environment of our annual sports day to a wide range of whole school House events, our students feel a true sense of belonging to their House. We enjoy the occasions when students are able to work with peers in alternative year groups to contribute to a collective, common, goal. It is often such experiences which help to form lasting bonds between students, student leaders and staff as they witness the positive culmination of their efforts - whether that be raising funds for charity, volunteering within our community or competing in one of our many events.
Our House system deploys Latin terminology with our Houses named Aqua (blue), Ignis (red), Terra (green) and Aer (yellow) respectively.
Character Development
Our daily expectations, routines and behaviours instil an intrinsic motivation for displaying good character. Moral and civic attributes are discussed, explored, promoted and celebrated through our curriculum as students display our core values of Achievement, Collaboration, Innovation, Integrity, Respect and Responsibility. Students are recognised and celebrated for their wise choices throughout their school life. At RIS, our commitment to strong character development is testament to our steadfast belief in developing the whole child, in collaboration through our engaging work with parents.
Accomplishments
We recognise and honour our students’ accomplishments in all areas of school life throughout the year. Assemblies are held weekly and through these occasions, we regularly celebrate student achievements both inside and outside of school. Exceptional achievement is also shared with the wider school community through social media channels and school newsletters, as we seek to continually support the growth and successes of our wonderful students.
